Leading Well: 5 Choices for Christian Leaders a 5 - Day Plan by Michele C. Walker, Ph.D.

DAY 1 OF 5

Jacob Chose to Wait

So Jacob spent the next seven years working to pay for Rachel. But his love for her was so strong that it seemed to him but a few days.

Jacob wanted to marry the love of his life, but his path to the altar took longer than he anticipated. Seven years of labor was the price for Rachel's hand, but even then, Laban’s deceit stretched the wait another seven years.

In today’s world, waiting can feel unbearable, especially when we face deadlines. We grow frustrated with slow technology, lengthy meetings, and delays caused by others’ unfinished tasks. Waiting can bring us to our emotional edge.

Jacob’s story offers a lesson in patience. Despite his longing for Rachel, he chose to work and wait. He paid the price and remained committed.

Scripture reminds us, “Wait on the Lord and be of good courage” (Psalm 27:14). Often, God calls us to wait, not to frustrate us, but to prepare us. In the waiting, our character is strengthened, equipping us for when we reach our organizational goals (Romans 5:4).

Rushing can cause us to miss valuable lessons along the way. Consider this: the businessperson shaped by patience makes wise, God-honoring decisions. The speaker, grounded in good character, shares insights that reflect Christ. The manager who waits well leads with integrity, never sacrificing principles for short-term gain.

Few things done in haste have lasting value. Jacob’s journey wasn’t just about marrying Rachel. In the process, he became a transformed man. The deceiver who once stole his brother’s birthright was learning the importance of patience, sacrifice, and commitment.

When we surrender our ambitions and timelines to God, we realize He uses the waiting to shape us. Ultimately, it’s not just about the project but about who we become and how we influence others along the way. There’s beauty in slowing down, trusting God, and letting the journey refine us.

Reflection Questions

  • What areas of your work life require more patience and trust in God’s timing?
  • How can you embrace the character-building process while waiting for organizational goals to be realized?

Leadership Action

Practice: Make deliberate efforts to practice patience with your team, clients, and in meetings. Give them the time they need to complete their tasks and trust that honoring God through patience will lead to better long-term outcomes.

Let's Pray

Lord, Waiting is hard, but Your timing is perfect. Help us surrender our plans to You and give us the courage to wait well. Mold us in the process and teach us to delight in the journey. In Jesus' name, Amen.
