Five Simple Steps for an Extraordinary New YearSample
Walk humbly with your God
The concluding advice of Micah 6:8 is incredibly impactful. Every single word is important. Let's dive into this verse, word by word.
- Walk: To walk implies a couple of important concepts. First, it is an active word. Walking is something we do that requires intentional activity and effort. It isn't sitting, reclining, or even standing, but engaging in an ongoing activity. Walk also implies movement or going from one place to another. It also speaks of a present and ongoing action. It is something we intentionally do and continue to do.
- Humbly: Humility deals with heart and motive. Sometimes, we can do the right thing, but our hearts may not be right about how we do it. To walk humbly means we recognize who we are compared to who God is. We understand the relationship. We don't set the pace or the course. We aren't walking with God because of anything meritorious in us, nor can we take pride in the fact that God has invited us to walk with Him. To walk with God doesn't say anything about our merit, nor the merits of anyone else, but only speaks to the amazing grace and love of God.
- With: This means that we are on a journey together with God. We are not merely walking for God or toward God or after God, but rather in union with God. It speaks of His presence with us. He never leaves or forsakes but is with us always. We have fellowship and communion with God as we journey through life.
- Your: This word speaks of a personal relationship. We don't just walk with some god. We walk with a God whom we know personally and intimately. There is a relationship involved. We walk with our Father, our friend, and our Bridegroom all rolled into one.
- God: We are invited, even instructed, to walk with God. To move through life in step with the One who created, redeemed, and sustains the whole of creation. He spoke the world into existence, holds it in the palm of His hand, and invites us to journey through life together with Him.
To look to God for every need, listen for His voice and receive what He offers, and live our daily lives walking humbly with our God...these are our directions for an exceptional year and life.
