There Is No Law Against These Things

DAY 8 OF 9

Day 8

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23)

Gentleness is the eighth fruit of the Spirit. Often misunderstood as weakness, gentleness in the biblical context is a sign of strength under control. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us to come to Him for rest, saying, "I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Jesus, fully God and fully man, exemplifies gentleness—not a passive submission but a controlled, humble strength that offers peace and comfort to others.

Proverbs 15:1 teaches that gentleness in our speech can defuse conflict and foster understanding. Philippians 4:5 reminds us, "Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near." Gentleness should be a visible mark of a Christian's character, showing that we reflect the love and humility of Christ in all our interactions.

Colossians 3:12-13 encourages, "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience," indicating that gentleness is integral to our identity as believers. It goes hand in hand with the other virtues of Christlikeness, enabling us to forgive and bear with one another in love. 1 Peter 3:15 calls us to "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." Even in our defense of the Gospel, gentleness is essential!

A Gentle Answer

To develop and nurture gentleness, check your heart before responding to others. Practice listening attentively and speaking with care and humility. Choose your words wisely when conflict arises, remembering that gentleness can lead to reconciliation. In your relationships, treat others with kindness and respect. Refrain from harsh judgments or reactions. Gentleness does not mean weakness but strength under control. Choose to be humble, slow to anger, and quick to forgive, reflecting Christ's love in all you do.

About this Plan

There Is No Law Against These Things

The fruit of the Holy Spirit, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, represents God's transformative work in the life of a believer. These qualities are woven throughout Scripture, offering a portrait of the Christlike character we are called to embody. Embracing these virtues is the definitive mark of a life changed by Jesus and empowered by His Holy Spirit. This nine-part devotional will explore just what that looks like in the life of a true Christ-follower.
