What does it mean to trust God when everything looks uncertain?

Today’s reading is about a prayer from the book of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah had just obeyed a strange command from God—buying a field while Jerusalem was under siege. It looked ridiculous on the surface. But Jeremiah knew this act symbolized God’s promise to restore His people. So, he prays. And this prayer is a beautiful blend of faith and honesty.

Jeremiah starts by exalting God: “Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power.” He remembers God’s mighty works and steadfast love. But he doesn’t sugarcoat the present reality—Jerusalem is surrounded, judgment looms, and restoration seems impossible. Yet even in his doubt, Jeremiah prays with faith, trusting that God’s word will stand.

This is the kind of prayer Jesus calls us to: honest about our fears but rooted in trust. Think of Him in the Garden of Gethsemane, praying, “Not my will, but yours be done.” Faith isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about trusting the One who does.
