Prayers of the BibleSample
How can we do the will of God?
As followers of Jesus, we deeply care about the will of God. We want to know His plans for our lives! Many of us echo the psalmist’s words in Psalm 143:10:
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
We often seek specifics—what career to pursue, where to live, whom to date, or what ministry to start.
But while we long for these details, the Bible also clearly describes God’s will in some broader, foundational ways:
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Can we do the will of God?
Obeying God’s will requires action, obedience, and deliberate choices on our part. The passages in Thessalonians show us some practical examples:
•Abstain from sexual immorality.
•Rejoice always.
•Pray without ceasing.
•Give thanks in all circumstances.
But here’s the challenge: it’s not just difficult to do the will of God in our own strength—it’s impossible.
To do God’s will, we need His power working in us. We need His Spirit to equip and guide us. That’s why the author of Hebrews prays:
Hebrews 13:20-21
“Now may the God of peace… equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight.”
Doing God’s will is a partnership: our obedience and His power. He equips us with what we need to follow Him, transforming our hearts and actions to align with His purposes.
Today, ponder this: What is God’s will for you today? Reflect on how you can obey Him in the small and big choices of your life. Allow this prayer from Hebrews to inspire both action and dependence. Ask God to equip you with everything you need to do His will and bring Him glory.
