A Year in Luke/Acts

DAY 339 OF 364

“To the Emperor You Will Go”

Paul sees he has no choice but to appeal to the Emperor. If the law is going to keep him in a cyclical system without an obvious way out despite his innocence, he may as well go and testify about Jesus before the most powerful man in the world.

“This appeal merits Luke’s attention historically and because it mirrors Acts’ theological direction: Paul knows that he cannot obtain justice in Jerusalem (25:9), and so instead appeals to Rome (25:10-12).” (Keener, p574, Acts)

Luke is highlighting the incredible irony that Paul appeals to the Emperor of Rome in order to obtain justice. We will see tomorrow that who the Emperor at the time adds even more irony to the story.
