Instruction
by Courtney Hildebrant
"Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." — Proverbs 12:1
"Do not despise the Lord’s instruction, my son, and do not loathe His discipline; for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, just as a father, the son he delights in." — Proverbs 3:11-12
"All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." — 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Groom: During a lesson, an instructor’s correction can sometimes feel like unnecessary punishment or disapproval. While some trainers may misuse discipline, most seek to help their riders reach their potential. Unfortunately, some riders reject this guidance, ignoring or even quitting the sport. Those riders miss valuable lessons and fail to benefit from their trainer's expertise. God has given us His Word to guide and correct us in every area of life. The question becomes: will you reject His discipline or embrace the wisdom found in Proverbs 3:11-12?
Tack: Proverbs 12:1, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Proverbs 3:11-12
Ride: Why must a riding instructor enforce standards such as safety, proper equitation, consistent effort, and attention during lessons? Think about the benefits of receiving discipline from an instructor. Recall a time you benefited from your trainer’s guidance. How did it improve your riding and help your horse? List some reasons discipline can be hard to accept. Discipline is any instruction, training, or correction that aligns someone with expectations for success. Both rider and horse benefit from a trainer’s disciplined guidance, as God’s instruction always serves our good.
Cool Down: Ask God to help you humbly accept discipline, from your trainers and the Lord. Thank Him for loving you enough to guide you toward being more like Him.
