Jesus, Meek and Mild
'“…Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”'
So many people missed the coming of the Messiah because they were expecting a great warrior to come and overthrow Roman rule and elevate his people, the Children of Israel. The Son of God came in the form of a helpless baby, totally dependent on the help of his mother and earthly father to meet his need for survival. The Baby Jesus is known as meek and mild, and those terms are often viewed negatively.
The biblical definition of meekness is not continually concerned with one’s own ways, ideas, and wishes, willing to put self in second place and submit to achieving what is good for others. This is a strength the world rarely recognises. Meekness is a great strength under control. From the moment of his birth, Jesus modelled an unusual strength of chosen meekness.
Viewpoint Reflection
Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28). Is there an area in your life where God is calling you to put your needs aside for the sake of another?
