Haggai

DAY 9 OF 14

The later glory, or splendor, of the Temple the people were coming to build, is promised to be greater than the glory of the former Temple that was destroyed. What is interesting is that if we fast forward when the Temple is completed in Ezra 3:12, those who had seen the previous Temple weep because this one does not seem to compare:

“But many of the priests and Levites and heads of families, old people who had seen the first house on its foundations, wept with a loud voice when they saw this house…” Ezra 3:12a

So why is this house going to have a greater splendor? Well, notice how just before the Lord promises to “fill” this house with splendor. One way of looking at this is that this Temple is going to be filled with greater splendor because this will eventually be the Temple Jesus himself will worship and teach in. It is therefore also going to be the last Jewish Temple, even until today.
