Day 1: In the Beginning GOD

Discover: In the very opening of Scripture, Genesis 1:1, we are immediately introduced to the main character of the grand narrative: God. The Hebrew term used here, "Elohim," is not just a name; it is a profound revelation of His character. Elohim is plural, yet in its plurality, it conveys a singular, whole meaning. It speaks of God's omnipotence (unlimited power) and might also reveal the complex unity within the Godhead, the Trinity. Pause for a moment to consider the significance of this. The Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is not simply a theological idea, it is the heartbeat of creation. In the beginning, as God speaks the universe into existence, the Trinity is at work. Distinct functions operate in perfect harmony, bring forth light, separate waters, and sculpt mountains—all by the Word of God. Just as God speaks the universe into existence, John 1:1 reveals that this Word, through whom all things were made, is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus exists since the beginning of time. This act of creation, solely attributable to God, demonstrates His authority and power over all things, crafting existence from nonexistence by His mighty Word.

Learn: If we really believe Genesis 1:1, it's easy to believe everything else in the Bible. If God made everything, He's in charge of everything and can do anything. God's work in creation reveals His eternal power and divine nature; it affirms that He is infinite, eternal, existing forever, self-existent, and self-sufficient. While our minds often attempt to compare God to something we can understand, He is entirely unique; He is, after all, God. When we rightly understand God's power, we can shed our misconceptions about our own significance. We are not here by chance or because God lacked something without us. Rather, He is holy, and He created us simply because it pleased Him to do so. We must reject the thought that we have anything to add to who God is. This should move us to live in awe and wonder of His genuine glory and image. Let Him be the Creator, Author, and main Character of your life. Our holy, eternal God creates life not just so that we can see His power, but so He might just show you what it is like to experience genuine and true love in its purest form.

Apply: A.W. Tozer says it perfectly, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." When we internalize the truth of God's character and creative power as revealed in Genesis 1:1, it fundamentally transforms our perspective on everything else in life. If we truly believe God created all things, then we must acknowledge His sovereignty over every aspect of existence. Also, the creation narrative is a true invitation to trust God. As the many characteristics of God are revealed, we must understand we have a choice of where we will place our trust. Will we continue to trust in the fleeting, fading, and changing world, or in the rock-solid eternal power of God? How does understanding God as the ultimate authority over all things affect your trust in Him during challenging circumstances?
