Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

DAY 7 OF 7

Grow as a Disciple of Christ by Doing Ministry through the Church

Engaging in ministry through the local church is a vital way to grow as a Christian. The body of Christ requires all members to do their part in ministry, ensuring that the church functions effectively and fulfills its mission. Ephesians 4:16 states, “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” (NLT). This verse emphasizes the importance of each member contributing their unique gifts and talents to the church’s ministry.

Understanding our spiritual gifts is essential for effective ministry. By discerning our God-given abilities, we can identify the areas where we are best suited to serve. Romans 12:6 reminds us, “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well” (NLT). The local church provides opportunities for believers to discover and develop their spiritual gifts through various ministries and programs. This understanding allows us to serve more effectively and passionately, contributing to the overall growth and health of the church.

Doing ministry through the local church fosters unity and fellowship among believers. When we work together toward a common goal, we build strong relationships and a sense of community. Acts 2:42 describes the early church: “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer” (NLT). This spirit of cooperation and mutual support strengthens the church and creates a loving, welcoming environment.

The church is called to be salt and light in the world, influencing and transforming society with the message of Christ. Matthew 5:13-14 says, “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden” (NLT). By engaging in ministry, we extend the church’s reach beyond its walls, impacting our communities and the world for Christ. Our acts of service and love demonstrate God’s character and draw others to Him.

Additionally, we discover the joy of serving others when we do ministry. The apostle Paul said in Acts 20:35, “You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (NLT). Serving others brings fulfillment and joy as we follow Jesus’ example of selflessness and compassion. Ministry allows us to experience the profound satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of others and advancing God’s Kingdom.

By engaging in ministry through the local church, we grow as Christians, foster unity and fellowship, and fulfill our calling to be salt and light in the world. This practice enriches our spiritual lives and strengthens the body of Christ, allowing us to experience the joy and fulfillment of serving others.

Day 6

About this Plan

Becoming More Like Christ Through Your Church

From Acts 2 to Revelation 3, Scripture focuses on God’s work through the local church. Indeed, the local church is God’s 'plan A' for His mission on Earth, and He didn’t give us a 'plan B'. If we truly want to make a difference in this world, we will do so joyfully through our local church by serving others and serving the world.
