Following Jesus Will Cost You Something
The Chosen often gives us a beautiful picture of Jesus on the road with His disciples. They share meals, witness miracles, and experience unforgettable moments together.
But being on the road with Jesus isn’t just carefree good times. It also costs something.
Mark 10 introduces us to a young man who seems to have everything together. He knows the Scriptures, follows the rules, and genuinely wants to honor God. If we saw him today, we might think, “That’s a model believer.” He comes to Jesus with a question: What must I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus begins with the commandments, and the young man confidently says he’s kept them. Then Mark gives us a beautiful detail: "Jesus looked at him and loved him.”
Then Jesus invites him to follow Him. To become a disciple.
But the young man walks away sad. He wants life with God, yet he cannot release the thing that stands in the way.
This story shows that there is a difference between following all the right rules, and following Jesus. Rules are easier. They are clear; they leave you with some measure of control. But when we follow Jesus, he asks for our heart, our trust, and sometimes our comfort and possessions.
Jesus goes on to mention some things his followers might have to give up: relationships, security, belongings, familiar places:. Following Jesus comes at a cost. But it also comes with a promise: a life filled with God’s presence, God’s family, and God’s reward, both now and forever.
The story has a bit of an open ending. The invitation still stands. Jesus lovingly looks at you too and says, “Follow me.” Will you?
Reflection Questions
- Can you relate to the rich young man? How so?
- What is the difference between following the rules and following Jesus?
- Is anything standing in the way of you following Jesus?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your honest answer to this young man's question. You saw his sincerity, and You looked at him with love. Lord, would You answer me as well? Show me anything that keeps me from following you wholeheartedly. Help me to follow You every day. I want to be Your disciple. Amen.
