Thunder (S2-E1)

DAY 1 OF 4

In the Beginning

Many stories begin with the words “Once upon a time,” followed by the introduction of the main character. In a way, the Bible opens with something similar: "In the beginning …" and then immediately, "God." From the very first sentence, Scripture makes something unmistakably clear. This is God's Story, and He wants to share it with you.

Before your story began, before the world existed, God was already there. He is not limited by time. He simply is. And so God also calls Himself, "I Am." You are part of a much bigger Story, one that started long before you took your first breath.

God Creates Light

The first thing we see about God in the Bible is that He creates. From nothing, He creates something. By speaking, He calls light into existence. Where God is, light appears, because He is the Light. John testifies that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.

God Creates Life

Genesis also shows us that God is the source of life. He gives life to every creature, calling forth the plants and animals, the birds and fish, and finally creating human beings from the dust of the earth.

God speaks life.

In John 1, we discover something even more incredible. John talks about "the Word" as a Person: Jesus. Jesus is God. Jesus is the Light that shines in the darkness. Jesus is the Life.

God reveals Himself in many ways. You can see glimpses of His beauty in creation and in the creativity of the people He has made.

But God shows Himself in His Word in a special way—In Jesus, the Living Word, and in Scripture, the written Word. Both help you know who He is and who You are in His Story.

Reflection Questions

  • How do you know God, and where do you see Him in your life?
  • How do you see God’s creativity reflected in your own life?
  • How can you get to know God more deeply?

Prayer

God, You are greater than I can imagine. You were always there, and You will always be there. You speak life and beauty into the world. Jesus, show me more of who You are today. Help me to know You better and let Your light guide my life. Amen.
