Uncommon

DAY 19 OF 40

“and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks...” Ephesians 5:4

This verse does not mean that God doesn’t appreciate a good joke. However, He does want to change the sounds of life. He wants to elevate our communication so it brings value, affirmation, and an air of appreciation.

“My job sucks.” Does God have a problem with the word “suck”? I don’t think so. I believe He has a problem with the condition of a complaining heart from a follower of Him. “That guy is a moron,” the use of the n-word, demeaning the sexual choice of another person. These are all examples of devaluing the lives of people. These statements reflect a heart issue. You, without a doubt, have the liberty to wave a Confederate flag. However, if you are a follower of Jesus, ask yourself, “Is this accurately conveying the love of all people that God has?” The value of human life, as God values it, goes far above civil liberties or traditions. God wants a new sound to come forth. I’m not trying to be like my pop or what my personality type says I am. I am trying to imitate God.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. Why would filthy talk be considered unfit for followers of Christ?
  2. Do you represent God well with the things you say?
  3. Who can you partner with to help hold you accountable for word choices?

About this Plan

Uncommon

The purpose of this devotional is to take a deeper look into the "uncommon" living for those of us walking with Jesus. We are declared holy through Christ, so how do we walk in that holiness? How can we be set apart and walk out our holiness?
