The 10 Commandments of Christian Dating

DAY 4 OF 5

Proverbs 11:14

“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.”

While it’s good to have standards and know what you’re looking for in a partner, there is such a thing as being too picky. If you are, you might miss out on someone great! The good news is you don’t have to navigate dating alone. Because of this, the next two “commandments” of Christian dating are about open-mindedness and guidance.

Christian Dating Commandment #7: Thou Shalt Not be Too Picky

While faith is one area to always be picky, try not to be too picky when it comes to things like looks, hobbies, style, and height. Be open-minded and willing to date someone who isn’t your typical “type.” You never know how much you might enjoy being in a relationship with someone you typically wouldn’t go for. Remember, shared values, beliefs, and life goals are the foundation of a lasting relationship, far beyond superficial preferences.

How to apply this “commandment:”

  • Reevaluate your must-have list to focus on deeper qualities like faith, values, and life goals over superficial traits.
  • Give chances to those who differ from your usual type, appreciating the potential for unexpected compatibility.
  • Get involved in activities outside your comfort zone to meet diverse individuals who share your core beliefs and values.

Christian Dating Commandment #8: Thou Shalt Ask for Guidance

Asking for Christian dating advice isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of wisdom. You don’t have to go through this journey alone. Learn from people who’ve been where you are and are now in a loving, God-centered relationship like you want to be. Talking openly and honestly with people you trust in your faith community can help show you God’s plan for your relationships.

How to apply this “commandment:”

  • Reach out to mentors or couples within your faith community who embody a healthy, God-centered relationship for guidance and support.
  • Attend workshops, seminars, or classes that focus on Christian dating principles and relationships.
  • Participate in group discussions or Bible study groups focused on relationships to gain different perspectives and advice.
