The 10 Commandments of Christian DatingSample
Mark 12:30
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
In Exodus 20, God gives Moses and the Israelites the 10 Commandments — His fundamental laws for living a righteous and holy life, guiding their relationship with Him and with one another. Similarly, there are guidelines for Christian dating that can make your experience better, more enjoyable, and more fruitful. The first two “commandments” of Christian dating are about putting God first and putting in effort.
Christian Dating Commandment #1: Thou Shalt Put God First
God before everything. God before everyone. Your relationship with God before any other relationship. It’s the most important Christian dating commandment (and a great rule to live by in every aspect of life). When you prioritize your relationship with God, you invite His guidance and peace into your dating life.
How to apply this “commandment:”
- Start each day with a prayer, inviting God into your life and dating journey.
- Incorporate faith into your dating experiences by talking about your beliefs or even going to church together.
- Talk to people you trust about how to keep God at the center of your dating life.
Christian Dating Commandment #2: Thou Shalt Make an Effort
Your perfect match isn’t going to come knocking at your door. You have to put yourself out there and make an effort to meet new people. Whether you try online dating or go the traditional route, Christian dating requires effort. But remember, it's not just about finding someone — it's about becoming the kind of person ready to love and be loved in a Christ-centered relationship. This means growing in your faith, developing your character, and preparing yourself for the joys and challenges of a godly relationship.
How to apply this “commandment:”
- Work on growing in your faith to be ready for a relationship that focuses on God.
- Go to conferences or events about Christian dating to learn how to have a strong, Christ-centered relationship.
- Put yourself out there in group settings, making an effort to meet new people.
