DAY 18 OF 21

Jesus Was Grateful While Doing God's Will

By Issy V

Two festivals are the focus of our passage today. It is a time of celebration among the people.

A beautiful demonstration is then presented to us in verses 3-8. A woman pours expensive perfume on the feet of King Jesus. Yet some people did not understand this. They saw the pouring of expensive perfume as a complete waste of money – yet Jesus sees this sacrifice as a good thing. We learn sometimes that haters hate things that Jesus loves.

What a difference of hearts we read in verses 10-11. Judas loved money and betrayed Jesus with the promise of it. The Last Supper was Jesus' final meal with his disciples before the cross. Jesus knew at dinner that Judas would betray him, but he still ate dinner and communed with him (in other gospels, we learn Jesus washes all the disciples' feet on this night too).

Peter then proclaims he will never desert Jesus. Jesus knew all and said Peter would deny Jesus before the night ended. Jesus knew what would happen on the cross – remember, He was 100% human and 100% God so He would have felt the immense weight of all sin. He prayed that the Lord's will would be ultimately what happens. Jesus was then found and captured by the leading priests wanting to kill him.

It is important to reflect on these scriptures as they lead to a pivotal point—the cross. At the beginning of the chapter, we are reminded that Jesus cares about our heart posture towards him, praising the lady who poured perfume on his feet. We then read that Jesus is preparing his disciples for his time on the cross and practicing communion. Communion is something we should do to remember Jesus' sacrifice for us. At the very end of the chapter Jesus met with God and prayed. Jesus was feeling intense emotion. He chose to firstly go to his Father in prayer, and secondly to follow God’s will.

We should all be grateful for Jesus enduring and completing God’s will.

What are you grateful for?
