Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year OneSample
For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you (John 13:15).
Is Jesus just concerned about washing one another’s feet?
The slave in a home had the responsibility to wash the guests’ feet. Jesus takes upon Himself this role. Paul describes His mindset as follows: “But [He] made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant” (Philippians 2:7). Jesus seems to have a broader application than just washing one another’s feet. He is about to die for their sins and reminds them about the world’s hatred (John 15:18-19). Also, Jesus is aware of their bickering concerning who will be the greatest (Luke 22:24). He redirects them by sharing, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus desires each disciple to be willing to die for the other.
Employment Point: Follow Jesus by willingly laying down your life for the brethren.
About this Plan
Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions helps readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word.
