Bored Reading the Bible?Sample
I hope that as you have begun to apply these tips to your devotional time, you've started to see changes in your appetite for God's Word. Sometimes, as we begin to dive into Scripture, we can be tempted to put our own interpretation on it when the idea is to draw the meaning that God has placed on it.
God placed the meaning of the text there, and it is our job to try to dig it out. The Word of God is better than gold, and we have the privilege to discover this great treasure (Psalm 19:9-10). We dig it out; we don’t decide where it’s laid.
At first, it may seem that going the extra step to find out the author, the historical settings, and the context is somehow not that important. However, I believe that these are tools that we can use, alongside the help of the Holy Spirit, to grow in our love for the intricacies, beauty, and supernatural nature of God's breathed Word (2 Timothy 3:16).
We can do exactly that with the help of the Holy Spirit and by implementing simple Bible study techniques.
When trying to dig out the hidden gems in Scripture, here are a few practical questions you can try and answer:
- What is the context?
- What was the author’s intent?
- Who was the audience?
- What was the historical setting?
Doing a deeper search to find the answers to these questions will enrich your study time and leave you hungrier for more. Use tools like study Bibles and commentaries that are found online to find some of the answers to these questions.
The more you dig, the more treasure you'll find pointing you to Jesus.
Let's Pray:
Father, guide me as I explore Your Word more deeply. Provide me with the tools and wisdom to understand and apply its teachings.
