Growing a Peaceful Heart

DAY 7 OF 7

Faith that Brings Peace (Historic Story)

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, a former pastor of Westminster Chapel in London and the author of several books, told a story about himself as a young Christian.

Eager to learn, Jones met with some older and wiser friends to discuss faith and theology. One day the topic focused on, “What is the essence of being a believer in Christ?”

Someone turned to Martyn and asked, “What do you think, Jones? How would you define what happens in a believer’s heart?”

Surprised, Jones stammered, “Well, I . . .” Then inhaling deeply, he continued: “That’s hard. In fact, I suppose it would take the rest of the day to explain it.”

An older woman in the group gently chided him with, “Oh, no, Martyn. You are an heir of salvation. Purchased by God. Born of His Holy Spirit. Washed in His blood.” These words sound strange now but speak of God saving us so we will live in heaven.

Silence filled the room as all pondered the accuracy and beauty of this lady’s reply. It’s true. Believers don’t have to be astute in theology to define the faith. One way may be to just joyfully sing “Blessed Assurance.” The word assurance means you can count on it. Yes, you can have peace always once you believe and trust in God.

For the rest of his life, Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounded the faith in depth, beauty, and simplicity. God blessed his congregation for many years, and his work still teaches and inspires today. We can rejoice with both old and new songs about God’s power, love, and peace.

Today’s Peace Step: Be prepared to explain your faith simply and why that brings inner peace.
