AVOIDING PROCRASTINATION

Scripture Reflection 

“How long are you going to wait before taking possession of the remaining land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given to you?” ~ Joshua 18:3 NLT

“Procrastination may relieve short-term pressure. But it often impedes long-term progress.” ~ John Maxwell

Procrastination is another serious barrier that stops us from reaching our goals. It is a lot more complex than just putting things off. A well-known psychologist, Piers Steel, published almost 800 studies on procrastination!

The root cause of procrastination stems from a problem with our relationship with ourselves, which directly implies a problem with our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Like many other strongholds, procrastination usually stems from some type of fear: fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being controlled, fear of intimacy, fear of separation, and the list can go on and on.

In the Old Testament, Joshua was chosen to be Moses’ successor to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. His greatest strength was his willingness to submit to God. As he assumed his new position, he couldn’t help wondering why some of the tribes were procrastinating in possessing the land as God had instructed them. To combat this problem, Joshua took the initiative and delegated three men to take action and move the task forward. 

This issue is far too complex to address in this book alone, but the Word offers some solutions to get you to start changing this destructive behavior.

First, seek God regarding how to prioritize your schedule (Matt. 6:33). Then, submit all of your fears to God as you focus on the end result instead of the fear.

I seek Your kingdom above all else. I put You before my agendas, my timelines, and my priorities. I walk in faith and not fear. I walk in power, victory, and a sound mind. I do everything on time and in order. All my steps are ordered by You.
