HOW TO STAY FOCUSED

Scripture Reflection

It’s so easy for us to get distracted, emotional, discouraged, or just plain tired. How do we maintain our focus when we don’t feel like it? It’s so easy to lose our focus. We live in a society where we have so many demands placed on us that there’s little time for rest or reflection, and we really don’t know how to function when we don’t have 10 things on our to-do list.

In the Bible, we see a sharp contrast between how Jesus stayed focused and how his disciples were constantly distracted. In the popular story of Peter’s attempt to walk on water, we can learn a lot about focus. Peter started off well—he was actually doing it! Then Peter experienced the same issue many of us experience. 

He took his eyes off his goal and focused on the overwhelming situation. The result? He sank. If we focus on the challenges and magnitude of weight release, then we will also sink into despair. To stay focused on your weight loss goal when situations are difficult, focus on the power of the Holy Spirit rather than on your own weaknesses (2 Cor. 12:9).

Jesus teaches us a lot about focus. What action steps can you incorporate from Jesus’ life to keep you from getting distracted?

  • Jesus often went away on his own to refocus and spend time with his Father (Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16; Matt. 26:39).
  • Jesus used scripture to counter the attacks of Satan (Matt. 4:1-11).
  • Jesus resolved to stay the course regardless of the circumstances (Luke 9:51).
  • Jesus enlisted help and support of others (Luke 10:1).

I have the mind of Christ. My mind is set on the Spirit which is life and peace. My mind is being renewed day by day. The Holy Spirit lives in me and quickens me to do His will.
