To survive on earth, fish need food, water, and oxygen. People do too, but in different ways. Jesus cited something else we need to survive. He told Satan, “People need more than bread for their life; they must feed on every word of God.” In other words, people cannot exist without God’s Word to keep us alive every moment. The woman from Tyre and Sidon knew this. That is why she desperately sought out Jesus. We learn in Matthew 15 that when she found Him, she pleaded, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! For my daughter has a demon in her, and it is severely tormenting her.” Jesus at first seemed to turn her down, and His disciples urged Him to send her away. But she persisted. I think Jesus ignored her for a reason—to draw out her faith, to show His disciples that this foreigner had more faith than many of their fellow Jews. Jesus told her it is not right to take the food from the children—meaning the Jews—and "throw it to the little dogs.” The witty woman quickly said, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs get to eat the scraps that fall beneath their master’s table.” With that, Jesus said, “Dear woman, your faith is great. Your request is granted.” Notice this woman came and worshiped Jesus knowing He was her only hope. She stayed focused even when He seemed to deny her. She pleaded until Jesus gave her relief. We can do the same.
