A judge requires a witness to take an oath because the purpose of a witness is to bring out facts. Deliberately lying can lead to perjury and prison. Judges expect oaths will persuade a witness to tell the truth. This helps us understand why God took an oath. Of course, God knows that His words are perfectly reliable without an oath. But because we humans rely on oaths to give us assurance, God bound Himself with both a promise and an oath. God promised Abraham that through his seed God would bless all people on the earth. After Abraham volunteered to sacrifice his son, God was so pleased with his faith that God took an oath. He promised to multiply Abraham's children as the stars in the sky and as the sand along the seashore. God kept His word to Abraham. Today, we look back on how God fulfilled His oath to Abraham, and we gain great confidence that God will keep His word to us. The writer of the book of Hebrews celebrates God's faithfulness. He says our hope is strong and trustworthy and provides an anchor for our souls. Like an anchor that keeps a ship from being battered or sinking, our anchor is God Himself. He cannot lie and will not deviate from any promise He has made. That includes His promise to guide and sustain us in our entire sojourn in life, as well as His promise to give us everlasting life. God is entirely reliable.
