DAY 159 OF 365

Most people reduce their speed when they see the police—even when they are driving within the speed limit. They do it because they respect the officers in blue. Since we respect human authority, certainly we should respect God’s authority. The writer of Psalm 99 underscored this. He wrote, “The LORD is king! Let the nations tremble.” The psalmist then tells us why he believes we should revere the God of the universe. God is unlimited in power. He is holy, loving, and fair. To say that God has unlimited power and authority is to say that God can do anything He chooses to do. To say that God is holy is to say that God is pure; He cannot tolerate, ignore, or excuse sin. Sadly, some people try to avoid God because God’s holiness and purity exposes their sinful acts. Others find comfort in God’s holiness. They know God will forgive and cleanse them when they confess and forsake their sins. The psalmist then cites an example of God’s mercy. God allowed Moses, Aaron, and Samuel to intercede for the people. They pleaded with God on behalf of the erring people. Later, God sent His only Son, Jesus, to teach us God’s will and to offer up Himself as the perfect sacrifice. Now Christ serves as the Great Intercessor for all who accept Him. God has done all this because He loves us so dearly. That is why we honor, love, respect, and seek to obey God.
