The Gospel of Mark

DAY 69 OF 112

Jesus Warns Against Selfish Ambition (Mark 10:35-45)

In Mark 10:35-45 (also told in Matthew 20:20-28), James and John ask if they can have a more important role in the Kingdom. This incident reveals yet again the disciples’ failure to grasp Jesus’ teaching on humility, ignoring the Lord’s repeated instruction that He was going to Jerusalem to die. They still thought that Jesus' physical presence would bring about “the Kingdom” and they were busy maneuvering for their places of prominence in it. Jesus is saying in His response that the greatest glory goes to those who suffer the most for Christ. He also predicts that James and John will also suffer like He will.. Jesus was the supreme example of what it means to be a servant leader.

Considering James and John's request for positions of honor, how does Jesus redefine greatness through service, and how can we actively practice selfless service in our relationships and communities?
