God Cares for Us
"Does he love me?" "Does she love me?" The human heart longs for emotional security. We strain to look for signs in the words and actions of others to see what they really think of us.
To my amazement, my wife has kept all of my love letters to her. I guess that their words provide assurance to her even though they were written decades ago. Here are words from one of God's love letters to his believers in the 8th century B.C.: "'Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,' says the LORD, who has compassion on you" (Isaiah 54:10).
Do you see where Isaiah is pointing you? Not at your flawed spiritual report card. Not at your cuteness or perfect performance of religious rituals or earnest promises. When you want to know if there's hope for you, be quiet and listen. Listen to God's love letter. Believe him when he tells you that his love for you is his decision. He has decided to be kind to you because he is kind.
