It’s pretty safe to say that the Lord’s Prayer is one of the most famous prayers in the world. Even people who aren’t believers have heard the words in a song, on screen in a movie or TV show, or even from a family member or coworker. Some of us have heard this prayer so often that we may be a little guilty of glossing over the words now and then. Or we have it memorized so we don’t even have to put much thought into reciting the whole thing word for word. But no matter how many times we say or hear it, this prayer really should pack a powerful punch. It’s a reminder to put God and heavenly matters first in our minds and our everyday lives. It’s a prayer that acknowledges the greatness of God but also is filled with requests to help us in our efforts to live more in the way that God wants us to live.
Read over this prayer a few times. It may be helpful to read it in your head first, and then out loud to yourself. Is there a section that hits you a little harder than the others? Is there a word you find yourself emphasizing again and again? If you have a Bible, it may be helpful to underline or highlight the words or phrases that stick out for you.
