Overcoming Fear

DAY 5 OF 5

How to Overcome Fear

He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.
Psalm 112:7

Throughout our lives, we will have to face many fears. And to face each one of them, God has given us courage.

What is the meaning of Courage?

Moral strength in the face of danger, risk; bravery, intrepidity. firmness of spirit to face a difficult emotional or moral situation.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but it is something greater than fear.

Do you know someone courageous who inspires you? Many times we wish to be like them, however, these people who've inspired us also faced their fears. The difference is that the courage in their lives was stronger than the fear they felt.

David facing the giant Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is an example of courage for all of us. The entire army of Israel was greatly afraid because they knew who Goliath was. The army looked at the size of their enemy, but David, full of the spirit of strength, looked at the size of his God and was victorious.

Daniel was also a great example of courage (Daniel 6). When he was forbidden to pray to God, Daniel did not fear losing his own life and was courageous in disobeying the law that required him to make no more requests except to the king. Daniel was thrown into the lion's den and received great deliverance from God.

Jesus in Gethsemane also had to face the fear of death. Drops of blood ran down Jesus' face, such was the fear and dread He felt. However, God's purpose in Jesus' life was greater than the fear He felt, and Jesus surrendered to the Lord's will, voluntarily giving Himself up on the cross for our sins.

Jesus went through the same fears in the flesh that we go through, and He identifies with our pain. Jesus is our model of courage and victory over fear.

In the verse of Psalm 112:7, we learn that a heart firm and trusting in the Lord is able to overcome all fear.

Instead of declaring your fears aloud, declare that you have the spirit of strength. Believe and keep your heart steadfast in God, be courageous and you will have victory over all your fears.
