Trust: A Walk Through the Psalms (Ps. 121-150)Sample
Imagine running into a battle, but you are the only one fighting for your country. You are the only one trying to defend the honor of your homeland against the enemies that seek to take it over. Sometimes as believers, it can feel like we are fighting a losing battle against our sin. Our sin or temptation can feel so heavy that we do not know how we can possibly overcome it. In these moments, we are to remember the victory that is ours through Christ. We may feel alone and helpless in our struggle against sin, but because God is on our side, we have victory over our sin.
On our own, we are hopeless in our struggle against sin. We do not have enough power in our own strength to resist sin. But Jesus stepped in as our mighty victor, who accomplished victory through His death and resurrection (Colossians 2:15). Jesus has triumphed over sin and death, and if we place our faith in Him, we share in His triumph. The salvation we receive through Christ not only forgives us of our sins but also enables us to fight against our sins. The Holy Spirit that is given to us through Christ empowers us and gives us the strength we need to resist our sin. Even when we fail, the Spirit helps us to keep fighting and pursuing obedience to God.
So when we struggle against our sin or the sin of this world, we can remember that God is on our side, fighting for us and empowering us with the help of the Spirit. Christ’s victory and the promise of God’s mighty presence with us give us boldness as we continue to live in this broken and sinful world. Because Jesus has already won the victory, we know that no attack of the enemy can prevail against us (Romans 8:37). And we know that one day, Jesus will return to remove all sin and brokenness from this world forever. If God was not on our side, we would be hopeless. But because He is, we are victorious.
