Songs of the Soul: A Lent Devotional

DAY 2 OF 40

If you’ve ever stood among the stars on a dark night, and taken in the vastness of His Creation, you may have felt small. Maybe even insignificant.

The psalmist had the same experience – being overwhelmed by the vastness of God and His Creation. “When I consider Your heavens”, he writes. His gaze at Heaven brings him to a place of reflection and pause.

As followers of Christ, we certainly should be impressed by God’s Creation. In fact, we are reminded in Romans 1 that “since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen”. Nature points us to God, and serves as general revelation to all people everywhere of the existence of God. Nature reminds us of God, but nature is NOT God. Nature rightly reminds us that God has set “eternity on the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11), causing us to cry out to an unseen God.

As we observe the crashing waves and the vastness of the oceans, we likely feel really small. And yet, the paradox is this: as small as we are, we are also incredibly valuable. Nature serves as a readily accessible tool to keep life in perspective.

The psalmist concludes that this massive Creator God is both “mindful” and “caring” to each of us as individuals. He is both big and Small. He is both Vast and Near. He is both Mighty and Intimate. A proper view of God holds these extremes in tension.

How might you need to shift your view of God today?

Prayer:

Dear God, You are the God who created the vastness of the Universe, and also the God who cares about the small details of my life. Help me see You as You truly are, all the days of my life. Amen.
