Songs of the Soul: A Lent Devotional

DAY 7 OF 40

On August 5, 2010, an unexpected explosion occurred at Chile’s remote century-old San Jose mine. This explosion caused a massive collapse that left 33 miners trapped some 700 metres underneath the surface and about 5 kilometres from the mine’s entrance. The miners, covered in soil and dust, discussed all the possible ways to get themselves out. But even with their expertise and experience, they realised that there was no way out. These miners could only rely on a small amount of food and wait for a miraculous rescue.

One of the miners gathered all the miners to pray every day at noon. His first prayer was something like: “Lord, we are not perfect, please have mercy on us and please look after our families. We present our whole situation to You because we cannot do anything here. All we have is You.”

The rescue mission lasted more than two months: after 69 days, all 33 miners were rescued. Twenty-two of them had accepted Jesus as their Saviour.

In Psalm 62:5-8, David counsels his soul to trust in God alone because his hope is from Him. With many unknowns and uncertainties ahead of him, he is calling his soul to wait in silence for God's Deliverance and His Perfect Timing. Even though the enemies were attacking him, David cried out to God to proclaim that He alone is his Mighty Rock, his Refuge, his Fortress, his Salvation, and he will not be shaken.

Life is not smooth sailing. There are ups and downs, highs and lows, good and bad situations we face every single day. There are times we might feel trapped, lost, or stuck; or we hit a dead end, or find ourselves in a lose-lose situation. But God asks us to trust in Him and Him alone, at all times. He asks His people to pour out their hearts before Him because only He can provide the shelter that we need.

Today, if you’re in a season of waiting, God is telling us that He is our Hope, He is our Salvation. He is working with a Purpose that you may not realise, but His Promises are always good. We are not waiting on our circumstances or situations to change, but we are waiting on God, as He is Sovereign over it all.
