Good To Know: Good Advice For A Better Life

DAY 2 OF 9

If you and I were sitting across the table from each other, it would be interesting to hear your response to each of these names: Taylor Swift, LeBron James, Steve Martin. You may recognize each of these names, or you may not.

Hearing someone’s name elicits an emotional response. Some names put a smile on our faces, while others make our eyes roll. Good or bad, it is simply part of the relational world we live in.

The same thing happens when other people hear our names. We didn’t choose our names, but we do influence what people think of when they hear them.

Our reputations are built on something. What do you want your foundation to be? Building a reputation on professional accolades, financial success, or a widespread social media presence isn’t necessarily a bad thing; however, Proverbs 22:1 holds the  key to how life works best long term: Our reputation is invaluable. Being self-involved or “full of ourselves” can create a reputation that pushes people away. But if you become the person who gives of yourself, you will develop a positive, loving reputation that attracts others.

We can’t change our past interactions with others, but we do have the chance to influence our futures. What do you want others to think of when they hear your name?

Questions for Reflection:

  • Make a quick list of the names of people who mean the most to you. What characteristics would you attach to each name? What themes do you see in these values?
  • What have you tried to build your reputation on? Has there been a time that others would say you were “full of yourself?” What would be a way to focus on helping others this week?
