What Jesus Said About Making Disciples

DAY 9 OF 9

Is it worth doing?

Robert Coleman: The question we need to ask about what we are doing is: "Is it worth doing? And does it get the job done?" (Author of The Master Plan of Evangelism and The Master Plan of Discipleship)

Warren Bird: We need a new kind of scoreboard that will help us count the number of disciples making disciples-making disciples.

Stealing sheep: Let us stop stealing sheep and go after the unsaved. Jesus came for them! Our problem is that if we go after the lost and make disciplemakers of them, there would not be a lack of people coming to church. Our problem would then be how to get them not to come to our church because there will not be space for everyone wanting to come.

Not a fad: To make disciples is a biblical principle. It is not a fad. It is at least not supposed to be one.

What did Jesus do? He called twelve to follow Him, and for three years, He spent most of His time demonstrating what He expected from them. He discipled them. And then He left.

A.T. Pierson said the church still has not finished taking the gospel to every person on earth because there is a "trifling with souls."

Bottom line: Our discipleship programs must equal our evangelism programs.

Seeds: How many seeds are in one apple? You can cut the apple in half and count the seeds. But nobody knows how many apples there are in one seed!

For all the "normal" Christians: Do not pass the buck to the pastor. Jesus is speaking to all his followers to be disciplemakers – not just to pastors. Unless, of course, you do not see yourself as a follower of Jesus.

Says 2,6 billion Christians worldwide: I am just one person! What difference can I make?

Day 8

About this Plan

What Jesus Said About Making Disciples

Jesus took 12 men, and for three years, He made them disciples and prepared them for the task He had in mind for them. After three years, with his ascension, Jesus said: “Go and make disciples.” He was actually saying to them: “Go and do the same as what I did.”
