On Purpose: A Lent Devotional Journey

DAY 23 OF 40

Day 23 | God-given pastimes

Reflection

This week we'll explore the purpose God gives us in our interests.

Have you ever written a job application and wondered what to put in that section about ‘interests’ that would make you stand out from the crowd? Maybe you’ve got loads to put in there, or maybe you come to it and think, ‘I used to be more interesting but now work and/or family have taken over’ or ‘I’m not sure my interests are exciting enough to share!’

The story the Bible tells is that each of us is unique. We’ve all been given gifts, spiritual and practical, that are intended to help us make a difference in God’s world and help each other flourish. Some of these are expressed through our work, paid or unpaid. But for many of us, we express them in our leisure time. Singing, extreme sports, and carpentry can all be outlets for our God-given gifts and passions.

Nick uses his love of carpentry to fix gates and tables for friends. Deborah’s love of baking is a delight for all her friends. Marina’s Nordic hill walking group is a place of deep friendship. Each one is gifted in their own way, creating unique frontlines where those around them prosper, a little better off for having them around.

The Bible says that God has given each of us gifts. What are yours? How can you use them to bless others? Do you see the intrinsic, God-given value of your interests? If you’re not sure, it’s often helpful to ask friends, family, and colleagues what they think yours are.

God, help me to use my gifts to bless those around me today. Amen.

About this Plan

On Purpose: A Lent Devotional Journey

Discover God-given purpose in everything you do. This Lent devotional journey invites you to think differently about your whole life – your family, friendships, work, interests, and neighbourhoods.
