Encountering Jesus

DAY 2 OF 49

DISCOVER

Continuing our exploration of Nicodemus’s encounter with Jesus in John3, we dive into the significance of our credentials. In verses 4-12, we see Nicodemus grappling with the concept of being “born again.” a common human tendency to rely on our own wisdom, knowledge, and accomplishments, seeking to earn our place in God’s kingdom through our credentials. However, Jesus gently but firmly challenges this mindset by emphasizing the necessity of a spiritual rebirth. He points out that our human accomplishments, no matter how impressive, cannot grant us entrance into God’s kingdom.

LEARN

In verse 10, Jesus addresses Nicodemus’ credential by saying, “are you THE teacher of Israel?”It is like He is saying are you THE president, are you THE celebrity, are youTHECEO of that large company? In other words, Jesus is says we can possess the most prestigious title, but if we are not careful, then the title that we may believe is a title of honor, is actually a great stumbling block. We so often focus on what is seen from the outside: what we have accomplished, how it makes us look, what kind of powerful leader that it makes us. But Jesus says none of those things matter. If we are not careful, we will get so caught up in what man can see, that we will forget God evaluates the condition of the heart.

APPLY

This passage serves as a powerful reminder that our religious affiliations, titles, or spiritual qualifications cannot save us. It is not about how many Bible verses we memorize, how many church services we attend, or the positions we hold with in the church. Instead, salvation is a work of the Spirit, a transformation that occurs when we humbly submit ourselves to God’s grace. In this encounter, Jesus encourages us to set aside our credentials and acknowledge our need for a new birth. Only through faith in Him can we experience this spiritual renewal and receive the eternal life He offers. So, let us remember, it is not about what we bring to the table; it’s about the grace and mercy God extends to us. Our credentials may open doors in this world, but it’s the faith in Jesus Christ that opens the door to God’s eternal kingdom.

About this Plan

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
