Counsel
“The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed upon Christians are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.” (CCC1845)
The gift of counsel is sometimes called right judgement. It is a gift that enables us to best make sense of God’s plan and how it applies to us, in our thoughts and actions. It can sometimes be as simple as having a gut reaction to something that tells us whether to go ahead or turn away. It can also be a slower, more patient and considered response to a complex sets of problems. In all these gifts we must remember that we do not achieve them by virtue of our own hard work but by the grace of God and by responding to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
Knowing what the right thing to do or say can be very hard. In the moment we can feel conflicted and unsure, it is in these moments that we must pray for God to guide us and increase the gift of counsel. The Holy Spirit is our great counselor and we must continue to grow in our love of the Holy Spirit to be most effective disciples.
As you pray today, pray for opportunities to grow in the gift of counsel. Pray that God will reveal more of his plan for your life and how you will live it. Pray for an increase of love of the Holy Spirit.
