The LIGHT of the WorldSample
G stands for growth
Plants don’t just live because of light; light also makes them grow. Soaking in the rays of the sun causes cells to swell and then divide, which makes a plant bigger and stronger and, eventually, fruitful. Nature preaches to us that light is essential for growth.
That’s part of what Jesus meant when he said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Soaking in the truths of his Word causes our faith to grow and, eventually, for the fruit of the Spirit to show up in our lives. Do you want more peace as you read the war-filled headlines? More joy as you deal with a throbbing back? More love for your crotchety neighbor? More self-control against your tendency to worry about all the terrible things that might happen to you? The best way to grow is to bask in the light of Jesus.
If you’re reading these words, I’ll assume that you already have a regular connection to Jesus’ teaching. If so, let me encourage you today not to just read but to meditate on the biblical quotes you find in these devotions (you’ll always find at least one!). Turn your thoughts toward every word and phrase like a flower angling toward the brightest rays of the sun.
Light makes plants grow. Jesus does the same for you.
