I stands for illumination

A few years ago, my wife and I almost became prey to two giant predators in northern Thailand. We were at a hotel complex that included a zoo (key detail!) and decided to squeeze in a morning run. The first problem was that it was so dark that we could barely see the sidewalk in front of us. The second problem was that we got lost in the twists and turns of the hotel complex. The last problem was that we ran into the glowing eyes of two giant beasts that towered above my 6’2” frame!

Turns out that they were just bushes! The hotel had a topiary garden where they trimmed bushes into the shapes of giant animals. Once the sun rose, we realized that we had come face-to-face with two towering leafy rabbits! Ha!

It’s hard to see in the dark, but the truth is pretty obvious in the light. That’s part of what Jesus meant when he claimed, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus’ words illuminate the truth and enlighten our minds. While scholars stumble in the dark, trying to figure out where life came from, how life ends, and what happens after death, followers of Jesus see the simple answers.

We are created by God the Father. We are saved by the blood of Jesus. We are led by the truth of the Spirit. We are awaiting the glorious judgment. What a blessing to see the truth as we walk in the light of our Lord!
