The Devil Makes Work for Idle Hands
The saying is true: “The Devil makes work for idle hands.” Here we see King David neglecting his duties as king. He was supposed to be battling; instead, he was browsing, wandering aimlessly on the palace roof. As we’ve already seen, it was here he saw Bathsheba bathing, and his lust for her was ignited. I do believe lust and laziness go hand in hand. Those with no project to work on, no goals to strive for, who stay up all night playing video games and only get up at 10 a.m., are often the same ones who live in habitual sexual sin.
I’ve noticed in my own life that when I take a day off and just lie awake in bed in the morning, temptations start to enter my mind. When I realize what’s happening, I jump up and set my mind to a task—and suddenly the thoughts disappear.
Don’t give Satan a foothold. Temptation is inevitable for the believer, but if we live a lazy lifestyle we are inviting a beating from Beelzebub. Apparently, experts tell us that exercising to the point of exhaustion is scientifically proven to help overcome a pornography addiction. That makes sense, because God created our bodies to labor in a field, to be physical, and to exert energy. The human body contains sixty thousand miles of blood vessels; that means they could wrap around the earth two-and-a-half times. These blood vessels were designed to work, pumping oxygen through the body (Joseph Castro, "11 Surprising Facts About the Circulatory System," Live Science). But many of us spend our days sitting at a desk, slumped in a chair. So perhaps a very practical tip for you today is to integrate some serious exercise into your routine. It will keep your mind and body busy; besides, your doctor may thank me for it!
