"The Talk" for Parents - A Biblically Based Sex Talk for Your KidSample
Wisdom for Sex: Developing a Culture of Sexual Integrity
Not only does the book of Proverbs contain several one-liners on sexual integrity, the entirety of chapter 7 in Proverbs is dedicated to the sex talk. This becomes the clearest scriptural proof concerning the parent’s responsibility to overtly and emphatically deliberate over these matters with their child. From Genesis through to Revelation, we have received clear and consistent instruction regarding God’s design and expectations of us in sexuality. Yet Proverbs chapter 7 could not be more on-the-nose about the duty of the parent to focus on the sex talk with their child. Stated even more plainly: Proverbs chapter 7 IS the sex talk. And it sets the example for us in how to proceed within our own homes.
Whatever shame or awkwardness about sex you might have inherited growing up, if the sex talk was not much a part of your formative years, it’s understandable that you would feel hesitant to initiate this relational process with your own child. However, if you remain in those feelings of discomfort, inactive in this righteous pursuit of your child’s well-being, then the status quo will only remain like it is. This is how generational tendencies in families perpetuate. Even so, one single generation can make all the difference in the overarching trajectory of a family legacy. Yourself and your child can together become the turning point of your family’s history in plotting a better course and reaching a greater destination.
Does that encourage you? To consider how God has equipped and empowered you to leave a lasting influence over a thousand generations that would come after you! This is heady stuff. Nevertheless, the simplicity of it begins with a single conversation, however clumsy that might be at the start. No matter what, authenticity is key. Even if they don’t show it or express it right away, your child will appreciate your genuineness and concern for them. Only good things are in store for your whole family, those before you now and those that await your influence in the future. All you have to do is… just begin!
Pray
In quiet, what are the most significant memories that you have of your own parents. It’s likely there are things you wish that you had received from them, however healthy or unhealthy those relationships were during your upbringing.
- Can you become the parent that you wish you’d had?
- Ask God to illuminate ways that you could become more intentional with your children.
- Meditate on how well you have balanced discipline, instruction, affirmation in your expressions toward them.
- Ask God for insight into your child’s heart, to perceive what motivates them, how God has fashioned them in their uniqueness.
