21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 8 OF 21

Depending on what version you are reading, the first story may not be in your Bible. This text is missing from some ancient manuscripts, but most scholars agree that it belongs in the Bible because it is consistent with the rest of Scripture and consistent with the flow of John.

Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 8:

  1. The people were celebrating the Festival of Tabernacles so everyone would have been sleeping in tents. It would have been easy to catch someone in the act of immorality. On the other hand, it would have been early morning making it difficult to see. The law said the woman should have been taken to her husband before the court. The law also said the man sleeping with her would also be charged. The stones used would have been about the size of your head and the one who accused someone of a crime would throw the first stone.
  2. Jesus says He is the light of the world. Light was a very important symbol during this festival. Every night big golden candelabras were lit up as a reminder of the pillar of light God used to lead the Israelites during the exodus from Egypt. Jesus is the moral light that should guide us each and every day.
  3. The Jews knew Abraham was a friend of God’s, so as his children they believed they automatically were too. When they told Jesus they were not illegitimate, they were trying to provoke Him by saying His mother had Him out of wedlock. They then called Him a Samaritan, which was one of the strongest insults you could make to a Jew.

About this Plan

21 Days in the Book of John

John sets the foundation for understanding the Trinity and shows how Jesus is God. The purpose of John’s message was made abundantly clear when he wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” Join me as we read one chapter a day and learn about the deity of Jesus Christ!
