21 Days in the Book of John

DAY 12 OF 21

This chapter marks the end of Jesus’ public ministry and marks the beginning of His last week before the crucifixion.

Here are a few things I’d like to point out about Chapter 12:

  1. Some scholars believe that the dinner Jesus was at where Mary poured perfume on his feet was the same dinner spoken about in Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:2-9. Most theologians agree that these were 2 separate events. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus’ head was anointed with oil. Traditionally Jews would wash and anoint the body of someone who died, then wrap it in grave cloths and anoint it again. This may be why Jesus was anointed on two different occasions.
  2. Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem must have been an incredible sight to see. Many Jews were there for Passover. History says 256,500 lambs were slain so with a minimum of 10 people per lamb it would be estimated that at least 2,600,000 people were in Jerusalem. Jesus rode in on a donkey to show that he was coming humbly in peace. When He returns, He will be riding on a white horse to signify He is ready for war.
  3. For the first time, Jesus says His time has come as He foreshadows His upcoming death. A voice came from Heaven and said, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” This is only the third time God spoke audibly to Jesus. The first was at His baptism and the second was at the Transfiguration. Believers heard and understood His words, but nonbelievers heard only a sound like thunder. Sadly, many in the crowd were unbelievers and Jesus was in great danger.

About this Plan

21 Days in the Book of John

John sets the foundation for understanding the Trinity and shows how Jesus is God. The purpose of John’s message was made abundantly clear when he wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” Join me as we read one chapter a day and learn about the deity of Jesus Christ!
