Enough

DAY 6 OF 28

You've heard the phrase, "It is better to give than it is to receive." That seems like a reasonable standard to live by. It reminds us to not get too self-focused and remember the needs of others.

However, what happens when you give, give, give, but you feel like the person you've shared with isn't giving back? Maybe you've asked a friend to hang out four times in a row, but they never initiate contact with you? Or maybe you've complimented a friend on her outfit at school several times, but she doesn't say anything kind about you in return?

It can be discouraging and exhausting when generosity seems like a one-way street. When we pour into the people around us, but don't receive anything in return, it can be frustrating and discouraging.

We don't want to approach sharing with a "strings attached" mentality, meaning that we only give because we expect something in return. However, healthy friendships work both ways — friends invest in each other.

There are times, though, where others may not have the capacity to give back. Maybe they are struggling emotionally, or worried about a family member who is sick. In those times, we can continue to be present, compassionate, and generous friends, knowing God will give us what we need.

In the long run, we can't completely depend on others to fill our cup. We want to have healthy, reciprocal friendships . . . but ultimately, only God can truly satisfy our needs.

About this Plan

Enough

For the next four weeks, we’ll look at how the earliest followers of Jesus created a new kind of community as God's family. Through their example, we’ll learn that there is enough when we share what we have — and if there isn’t enough, God provides. We'll also learn that our actions can speak when words aren’t enough and that God’s love is always enough.
