Because of Jesus I Am...Sample
Verse - “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” (Ephesians 2:13)
Think - In high school, I walked into Abercrombie & Fitch once and then never again. The silent stares shouted, “What are you doing here?” Whether it was my own projected insecurity or their deliberate elitism, I didn’t feel cool enough to shop there. That may have been for the best.
I’ve been a pastor long enough to know that some people feel that same way about church. Whether perceived or confirmed, it is unfortunate that so many feel like outsiders when the message of the gospel is actually, “Come on in! You’re welcome here.”
The basis for this welcome is not family connections like a reunion or accomplishments like a VIP club or paying dues like a country club. The only grounds for acceptance is the free gift of grace purchased by the blood of Jesus that is available for anyone who believes.
Jesus has removed all barriers that once divided people into insiders and outsiders, and He reconciled people from every path of life into one family. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you are welcome in God’s family simply by trusting Jesus instead of yourself.
Apply - If there is any insecurity because of your past or present, trust the truth that God has welcomed you on the basis of who Jesus is and what He’s done. And if there is any pride that would cause you to look down your nose at anyone, remember the truth that you, too, were once in the same boat and only rescued by the grace of Jesus. Our only boast and hope is in the cross of Jesus!
Pray - Our Father in heaven, you are holy, and we are not. Apart from Christ, we bring no pedigree to warrant acceptance, so we cling to the blood of Jesus. Humble my pride and embolden my insecurity to find joy in your family and make room for others to join. Make your church the most welcoming family on earth! Amen!
