DAY 5 OF 7

God of Brilliant Lights

When Sarah and I were first married, living in Atlanta, I was leading a worship rehearsal on a dark, winter evening. This particular night, our tiny, black Yorkie-Poo, Obie, was uneasy, growling at various areas of our small apartment, seemingly following something around the room that...let’s just say wasn’t visible to the naked eye. Sarah, feeling increasingly uneasy as well, began praying, reading Scripture and decided that blasting some worship music would be a fantastic idea. As she was just about to press play, the power went out. The entire apartment complex and at least four city blocks: in absolute darkness.

Safe to say, most people don’t prefer darkness. Unless they’re safely tucked under their covers and behind locked doors with family, people prefer light. “Darkness” carries thoughts of doubt, fear, evil, being anxious or lost.

In the Beginning, the world was dark. God’s first words were, “Let there be light!” But God wasn’t content only illuminating the physical darkness. Jesus Himself said, “I am the Light of the World. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness.” Jesus wasn’t afraid of our darkness, our sin, our diseases, our filth. Light is never afraid of the dark. Jesus touched lepers. He was a friend to sinners. And spirits of darkness cowered at His feet, begging mercy!

Darkness flees when Light is present.
Turn on a lamp. Light a candle and see.
Only then can you see!

One building alone was bathed in light that night in Georgia. Sarah scooped up Obie and walked to the church. No one wants to live in darkness.

“In [Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
