Chasing Donkeys Series: Follow the Tracks Sample
Invite Others to the Chase
Have you ever found yourself wrestling with God trying to reconcile the tension between “I want to serve You” and “Where do I start?” You strongly desire to be used for kingdom work but are unsure where to start or what to do.
I sense that is what the servant was experiencing as he and the soon-to-be king, Saul, were coming up short on finding the donkeys. They were likely getting frustrated and running out of ideas on where to look. Eventually, Saul began to give up, but the servant could not let it go. Interestingly, as the servant, he didn’t technically have a say in the matter. Yet, something in him would not relent in the quest to find the donkey. He felt the tension.
Then, as if on cue, he suggested they find the “man of God” (aka, the preacher) and ask him for help.
But the servant said, “I’ve just thought of something! There is a man of God who lives here in this town. He is held in high honor by all the people because everything he says comes true. Let’s go find him. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.” 1 Samuel 9:6
You can do the same. If you are in the middle of this tension, you should consider seeking counsel from the trusted people in your life. Ask them to help you navigate God’s desire for your life and clarify where to begin. Heed the words of the wisest man who ever lived:
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel. Prov. 12:15
Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory. Prov. 11:14
Once you settle on someone you feel walks with God daily, spends time in the Bible and prayer, and loves you enough to be honest, reach out and schedule time to connect. As you meet, share what you feel God is nudging you to do and the frustrations of your uncertainty. Invite them to give you clear feedback. As you finish your time together, establish a covenant to pray over your challenge for the next 30 days and plan to reconnect to share any clarity.
