It Doesn’t Make Sense
In the quest to find the donkeys, it became clear to Saul that he should give up and go back home. To continue looking to no avail made little sense. Have you ever considered the notion that some of the greatest stories we read in the Bible just don’t make sense? Take a look at these examples…
It did not make sense for Noah to build a boat when water had never fallen from the sky.
It did not make sense for Abraham to carry his only son, whom God had promised, up a mountain to sacrifice.
It did not make sense for Joseph to forgive his brothers after they sold him off as a slave.
It did not make sense for Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt on a mission without a clear destination.
It did not make sense for the success of the gospel to rest on the shoulders of uneducated vagabonds like the disciples.
And by all human standards, it did not make sense for one perfect man to carry the sins of the world to a cross and be THE sacrifice to cover it all. When it comes to pursuing God-sized ambitions, more than likely what we’re asked, compelled, or called to do will likely not make sense either. In fact, it could fill our lives with intense anxiety, fear, and tension.
The tension arises when we try to pursue this calling in our own strength and abilities without relying on God. The key is to reduce this pressure by moving towards Him, as He is the source of wisdom, power, and glory. When we are too stubborn to move, He comes to us. As illustrated in Revelation 3:20, Jesus invites the church in Laodicea, which happens to be struggling to live life in its own abilities, to open the door and let Him in.
Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
By opening ourselves to God, He can use us for things that may not make much sense to us. And that’s OK. What will make sense is how much your relationship with God will grow out of the pursuit of Him and what He’s up to in your life.
