#BeStill (Susanna Bigger)
In the USA, a very interesting survey was conducted. The people were to list ten things they feared most. The most feared thing was not surprisingly death. In second place in the fear list was flying. Fear of silence followed just behind speaking in public, dogs, snakes, and spiders.
Why? Why do we fear silence? Why do we try to avoid silence?
In the silence we get to know each other and believe that this is embarrassing. We fear that nothing valuable could come to light! Silence is overwhelming and challenging. Yes, that it is.
At the same time, I experience silence as healing, comforting, liberating, and peace-giving. Silence is the place where we can develop our unique personalities.
I have noticed that I need to train silence in the same way as a muscle needs to be trained. Unfortunately, most people are busy imitating others instead of training to endure silence.
Actionstep:
Today just try to sit quietly for two minutes without doing anything. This is more difficult than one would think. Suddenly your ears will itch awfully, 1,000 things which you still need to do will come to your mind. But practice makes perfect!
