Resilient: Powerful Hope in a Dangerous World

DAY 16 OF 45

Picture in your mind a magnificent king. Perhaps your first thought is Thor- god of thunder and king of Asgard. The king in your head may be the vicious Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. Maybe you think of King Charles the third, king of England… but probably not.

These kings all have a few things in common. They have been given authority. They demonstrate their power over their people. They are deeply flawed, though they may have good intentions. They likely feel most themselves in their seat of power.

Not so with our King Jesus. As Peter gives instructions throughout this passage and details the suffering of Jesus, we see the reflection of our perfect king. Jesus lived his life rejected by the very world he created (1 Peter 2:11). While Jesus was under trial, Pilate took notice of his goodness- his innocence, and Pilate tried to free Jesus (1 Peter 2:12, John 19:1-16). Though wrongly accused, Jesus submitted to the authority of those whom God allowed to be in a position of power (Matthew 26:57-68, 1 Peter 2:13-17). Jesus bypassed fairness and suffered the consequence of sin though he was purely good and did so willingly (1 Peter 2:18-25, Isaiah 53:7).

But do not be deceived- our King Jesus is all-powerful. He has authority over all kingdoms in Heaven and on earth. He did the miraculous among the people and has done the miraculous by including us in his resurrection! Our King came down from pristine Heaven to get in the mess with us on earth. And he didn’t come with a sword on a white horse; he came on a donkey, to be a carpenter, to live the human experience, to love the lowly and the weak. What a King!

Reflection Questions

  1. How does knowing that Jesus chose a low position on earth change your relationship with him?
  2. Do you see Jesus as a mighty king or a humble servant? How can you begin to see both perspectives?
  3. Do you see all of the Bible as a means of reflecting and pointing to Jesus?
